About Modern Competence

Why this exists

There's a gap between what most people know and what most people actually need to know. The practical stuff. How to handle a car in bad weather. How a paycheck actually works. How to have a hard conversation. How to cook something real.

Modern Competence exists to close that gap. Not with theory. With practical, usable knowledge you can put to work today.

The idea is simple: confidence follows competence. The more capable you become, the more confident you feel navigating life. And competence is learnable.

What you'll find here

Articles that teach real skills. On driving. On money. On mindset. On taking care of a home. On thinking clearly in a world full of noise.

Some are aimed at teens getting their first taste of independence. Some are for parents trying to raise capable kids. Some are for adults who realize they missed something and want to fill the gap. Many are for all of the above.

Nothing here is dumbed down. You'll get what you need to actually do the thing, not just know about it.

Who writes this

I'm Ben. I have three kids, which means I spend a lot of time thinking about what I want to make sure they actually know before they leave the house. This site started as a way to capture that thinking. It grew into something bigger.

I write about what I know, what I've learned the hard way, and what I wish someone had told me sooner.
